Safeco Insurance Company, originally known as General Insurance Company, was started in 1923 by executive Hawthorne K. In the 1960’s they began to offer mutual funds and commercial lines of credit. They were so successful that they renamed themselves Safeco Corporation. In 2008, Safeco Insurance became part of Liberty Mutual Insurance. Doing so this allowed Safeco to focus on exclusively personal insurance due to the combination of their parent company and national network of local independent agents.
