Tips on Preventing Your Pipes from Freezing

When temperatures drop in winter, the freezing temperatures put your pipes at high risk of bursting. Bursted pipes are one of the most expensive damages to fix as they require a lot of work. Even if the damage is minor, it can quickly escalate, causing severe structural damage to your property while also posing a risk for mold growth. However, you can do certain things to prevent such freezes. We discuss these below:

Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors

You should keep open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air circulation, especially if your pipes are in the exterior.

Set your thermostat to a particular temperature at night and day

Ensure to set your thermostat to maintain a fixed temperature all-day, both during the day and at night.

Insulate your pipes

Insulating your pipes will help maintain a warmer and higher temperature in your crawl areas, such as basements and attics.

Let water drip

Letting your water drip is a great idea to prevent the pipes from freezing. Allow warm water to drip through the night when it’s particularly chilly.

Seal leaks

Ensure to properly seal all leaking pipes that could let in cold air, which might lead to freezing. Leaks left unattended can lead to an increased influx of cold air, making your pipes freeze quicker.

How to keep your pipes from freezing while on vacation

Before leaving your home during winter, always take measures to prevent your pipes from freezing.

  • Set your thermostat to at least 55 degrees before leaving your home to help regulate your home’s temperature to avoid freezing pipes and replace batteries when necessary.

  • Ask your neighbors for help with some routine checks when you are away.

  • Drain your water system

How to thaw frozen pipes

Here are some things to do to help thaw your frozen pipes. Note that not all instances of freezes immediately result in broken pipes.

  • Turn on the faucet while heating the pipe to thaw it, allowing the melted ice to flow down the pipes.

  • Cut out all water supplies.

  • If you cannot locate the frozen section of the pipe, be sure to contact a licensed plumber.

  • Apply heat on the section of the frozen pipe, and use a hair dryer or an electric heating pad around your frozen pipes.

Dealing with property damage

Frozen pipes can burst and cause considerable damage to your home, which can cost a lot to fix. However, you do not have to worry about the cost if you have the right insurance policy to cover your expenses in case of unforeseen circumstances.
